The movie summary Society of the Snow begins with flight 571 of the Uruguayan Air Force taking off from Montevideo, Uruguay, bound for Santiago de Chile.

The flight is full of students and their families, as well as members of the Old Christians rugby team.

The flight is affected by a snow storm and crashes into a glacier in the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers and crew survive the accident.

The survivors are trapped in one of the most hostile environments on the planet. They have no food, water or shelter. Temperatures are below freezing and the risk of hypothermia is high.

The survivors organize to survive. Shelters are built, and water is collected from glaciers.

After 72 days, two of the survivors, Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado, decide to try to cross the Andes to seek help.

Society of the Snow is a Spanish suspense and adventure film directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, based on the novel of the same name by Pablo Vierci.
