The real story of Snow Society occurred in 1972. On October 13 of that year, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, on which a Uruguayan rugby team and some family and friends were traveling, crashed in the Andes mountain range. Of the 45 passengers and crew, only 29 survived.
The survivors found themselves trapped in a hostile and isolated environment, with sub-zero temperatures and few supplies. To survive, they had to resort to extreme measures, including eating human flesh from deceased passengers.
For 72 days, survivors built shelters, searched for food and water, and organized expeditions in search of help. Finally, on December 22, 1972, they were rescued by a group of Chilean mountaineers.
